@Remote is Ricoh’s device-telemetry platform. It captures meter readings automatically, flags service issues early, triggers consumable replenishment before devices run out, and gives the support team a fleet-wide view of every Ricoh MFP under contract.
For most customers the value is operational — accurate billing without chasing, fewer “the printer is jammed and nobody told us” calls, no end-of-toner surprises in the middle of a deadline. But the questions we field most often when a customer is approving @Remote are security questions — what does it actually send, who can see it, can someone use it as a way into our network? This page answers those directly.
What @Remote sends to Ricoh
A short list of device telemetry, sent on a scheduled interval:
- Device name, make and model
- Serial number
- IP and MAC address
- Toner and consumable levels
- Meter counts
- Operational alerts such as paper jams, low toner, and service codes
That’s it. Enough to support the device, bill accurately, and ship consumables on time.
What @Remote never transmits
- Document content (anything you print, scan, copy or fax)
- User identities or login credentials
- Files stored on the device
- Address book contacts or shared folders
- Network traffic on your LAN
- Configuration settings, passwords, or admin keys
The device sends metadata about itself. It does not send your data.
How the connection works
The MFP initiates an outbound HTTPS / SSL-TLS connection to Ricoh’s Communication Gate, which forwards the encrypted telemetry to the Ricoh Data Centre. Three properties of that architecture matter to a security review:
- Outbound only. The device opens the connection. Ricoh never initiates a connection back into the customer network.
- No inbound port on your side. No firewall rule is required for inbound traffic. There is no listener on the LAN that an attacker could reach.
- Mutually authenticated by certificate. Both endpoints prove their identity to each other before data flows. The connection cannot be intercepted by a third party even if they are on the same network path.
The architecture is ISO/IEC 15408 (Common Criteria) certified — the international standard for evaluating IT security functionality. Same standard governments and major banks use to evaluate the security of their own infrastructure.
What customers ask, in order
“Can Ricoh see what we’re printing?” No. Document content is never read or transmitted. The MFP holds the print job locally while it processes, then deletes it. @Remote has no visibility into the job content.
“Can someone use @Remote as a way into our network?” No. The connection is outbound-only; there is no inbound port and no remote-access path. The device initiates every conversation; Ricoh has no ability to initiate one back.
“Who else can read the data we do send?” The connection is encrypted and mutually authenticated end-to-end. The data is held in Ricoh’s data centre, accessed by Ricoh’s regional support teams under contract, and never sold or shared with third parties.
“Is it on by default?” On Ricoh devices under a managed-service or cost-per-copy contract, yes — @Remote is included at no extra cost and is enabled at deployment unless the customer explicitly opts out. Activation on existing devices takes minutes.
“Can we turn it off if we need to?” Yes. @Remote can be disabled per device at any time, by Ricoh or by the customer’s IT team. The trade-off is the loss of automatic meter reads, proactive alerts and toner replenishment — manual processes resume on disabled devices.
What this actually changes for your team
- No more manual meter readings. Monthly chasing for billing data stops. Meters are read automatically.
- Fewer “the printer’s down” tickets. Service issues are detected and routed to a technician before the user notices.
- No emergency toner orders. Toner ships when the device’s actual consumable level crosses a threshold, not when a user reports an empty cartridge.
- Single fleet view. IT can see every device’s status, error history and consumable level from one dashboard.
Trusted across the Pacific
@Remote is approved and active in major Pacific banks, government agencies, and regulated industries — sectors where the security review on any vendor-managed connection is rigorous. The same architecture and certifications protect every customer it’s deployed for.
